Talks at Salcombe Yacht Club
The talks programme for 2019 has been very diverse taking place on a Friday evening in the Chart room. The talks where followed by an optional meal in the bar or dining room.
In January Mark Dowie started the celebrations of the 150th anniversary of Salcombe Lifeboat, giving a clear story of life in the RNLI entitled Update from the front line – what goes on at Salcombe RNLI.
Richard Bray continued his journey about the Geology of Salcombe and the South Hams. His return visit in March
this year was equally as interesting and fascinating as last year. We so enjoyed Richard’s photographs of many familiar rocks around Salcombe. The talk has added more interest to cruising along
the coast and spotting the colours and formations of the different rock structures.
Hywel Bowen Perkins, who joined us on the 2018 summer cruise, spent an evening cataloguing the history of his Dunkirk little ship, Elvin, and recounting his round Britain exploits. Clearly a vessel with enormous history and with a record of saving over 40 lives from the Normandy beaches. Hywel
gave many people a tour of his beautifully restored Elvin whilst on the summer Cruise; a treat for all.
Justin Jones, The Rope Whisperer
from English Braids, returned with Steve from the Boatstore, to give a presentation detailing the properties of various types of rope and their uses, together with knots and splices. There was the opportunity for some hands-on practice which proved very useful, especially for the Cadets.
Roger Barrett from Salcombe Maritime Museum joined us for an evening detailing the history of both Salcombe and Hope Cove’s lifeboats looking back over the
past 150 years and recounting the disaster of 1916 when 13 crewmen lost their
lives crossing the Bar on their return to Salcombe. In July Club members were also given a presentation of the 150th Video Documentary “Premiere” produced by Chris Tizzard.
The 2019 programme was concluded with a talk by Nicci Pugh about the role of Her Majesty’s Hospital Ship Uganda during the Falklands war detailing how the school pupil education ship was commandeered from P & O and transformed into a working hospital with 3 operating theatres. Nicci served on board the hospital ship as a Naval Nursing Officer running a small team of surgical specialists and she told this personal tale in a lively and inspiring way.
