opportunities. They also packed a significant number
of skis to take advantage of the abundant Polish snow.
Throughout, wider Regimental life continues apace. The Pipes and Drums have roughly doubled in size; their 2018 success at the Army Championships repeated, crowned as the Army Champion Pipe Corps alongside thirteen further individual awards, including Army Champion Piper for Pipe Major Ben Duncan. Winter Sports have been a great success; Alpine, Nordic and Telemark teams all competed at their respective championships, with the more estab- lished Alpine team enjoying the best set of results for a decade. Regimental Equitation also saw a good year with investment from the Trust being put to use; the Sprot Cup, polo tournaments and ceremonial rid- ing all undertaken throughout the year. Golf, rugby and football, our other stalwart sports, continue with vigour. In golf, the Regiment assisted in hosting the Simpson Cup, a very special US/UK event encourag- ing wounded service personnel to pursue the sport. Our rugby team played Perthshire RFC in a rematch of the 1869 fixture against The Royal Scots Greys and, slightly ungraciously, emerged victorious.

Alongside the wider Regimental family, the year saw the Serving Regiment participate in the unveiling of our Memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum in April, whilst representatives from B Squadron attended events to mark the 75th anniversary of Nunshigum. In December the whole Regimental Family came together for the Laying Up of The Old Standard in Edinburgh. Looking further back into our history, we returned to Waterloo and to the site of the less well-known Battle of Glenshiel. 2019 marked the tercentenary of that earlier engagement and, thanks to the contemporary silk maps created by a Dutch Engineer, it is possible to retrace the exact movements of the Royal North British Dragoons. A powerful reminder of quite how long our role in national life reaches back.
As we look forward, the Serving Regiment will end its current commitment to operations in Eastern Europe and prepare for a period of high readiness in 2021. I hope you will enjoy this year’s magazine during this period of uncertainty. The Serving Regiment is com- mitted to the national effort to come through this cur- rent crisis and maintain our tactical edge. We will stay Second to None.
