Regimental Headquarters deployed into the field pro- viding a higher headquarters function to C Squadron to assure their readiness for deployment to Poland. The B Squadron hierarchy was gainfully employed: the Squadron Leader observing and mentoring the mounted sub-unit from The Scottish and North Irish Yeomanry; Capt Macfarlane, the squadron second in command, repurposed as the ‘Plans Officer’ in RHQ and concurrently seeking to better inter-Service records for the length of time spent in a sleeping bag; WO2 Lang, the Squadron Sergeant Major, managing the tactical engagement simulation equipment fitted to the vehicles and weapon systems of the exercis-

ing troops; SSgt Taylor, the Squadron Quartermaster Sergeant, supporting the delivery of ‘real life sup- port’; and the indefatigable Sgt King, our attached Royal Engineer sergeant, co-ordinating the actions of the free thinking, and not overly restrained, opposi- tion forces. The efforts from all ranks in the squadron ensured the exercise objectives were meaningfully met and C Squadron passed fit to deploy on operations.
Away from our core role, there have been opportuni- ties for extra-curricular activities. At the insistence of Maj Majcher, the squadron was treated to a day in the Pentland Hills to examine the actions that took place at Rullion Green in November 1666. In an oft over- looked battle, a force under command of Tam Dalyell quite mercilessly quashed a Covenanter uprising; one of the results of this action was Tam Dalyell attracting
