 Gold Winner
Emily Crosby, Leeds
Emily’s plot was an overgrown patch when they took it on a year ago, with rampant couch grass and plenty of other weeds. Over late summer, autumn and winter they covered the whole plot with several layers of cardboard and a modest layer of compost. They planted their first crops in mid-September; chard, spring cabbage and winter radish. By May, the work of the last 9 months started to pay off. By July the plot
was thriving despite a lack of sunshine and we harvested 27 different fruits and vegetables!
Charles said: “An amazing, joyful transformation in only a year, for a first-time allotment holder.”
Back in August last year we held a No Dig competition with Charles Dowding and sponsored by Chris Knott Insurance.
We received over 70 amazing entries, so to brighten up those dark winter days, we bring you some photos of the inspiring winning entries, along with some of those allotments commended by judge Charles Dowding.
