shifts. Additionally, I work alongside the military Professional Development Team at my unit in facilitating military placements on AMU, for individuals wishing to transfer into the QARANC.
I am currently attached to 22 Field Hospital as the only Medical Specialist Nurse for the JEFFH. I work on the Intermediate Care Ward (ICW) which is manned by a consultant physician and other specialist nurses and healthcare assistants. My daily ward routine includes providing evidence-based nursing care to all entitled persons partaking in Ex KO. Additionally, I am part of the Medical Emergency Team (MET) as one of the first responders should a MET call be initiated. Moreover, I am also here to provide guidance and teaching to anyone who requires assistance.
This being my first deployment as both a nurse and specialist I have had numerous opportunities to further expand my nursing knowledge by participating in frequent clinical presentations. This deployment has opened my eyes to the vast opportunities available, working alongside several diverse specialists. Although, this is only a short deployment, I have thoroughly enjoyed being part of this team of knowledgeable clinicians and look forward to the future as a military medical specialist nurse.
Corporal Emily Johnson Ward Nurse
I am a generalist Registered Adult Nurse normally based at Joint Hospital Group South where I work within the Surgical High Dependency Unit at Queen
Corporal Gurung
Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth. As an individual augmentee attached to 22 Field Hospital, I deployed for three months on Ex KO.
My role during the exercise was working as a nurse on the 12 bed ward within the JEFFH facility. Initially I assisted with the build of the field hospital and helped prepare for it to be fully operational and ready to receive casualties.
My day-to-day role within the hospital was to look after patients admitted and to liaise with other departments and hospital staff involved in their treatment As an additional duty I had the responsibility of being part of the MET. This responsibility saw me on standby to respond and assist with any medical emergency within the hospital while I was on shift. Overall Ex KO allowed me to experience nursing in a deployed field hospital environment and was a great opportunity to be part of.
Corporal Yogendra Gurung Intensive Care Unit
Health Care Assistant
I have been in the Army for 16 years, currently serving with 22 Field Hospital as a Healthcare Assistant (HCA). My roles and responsibilities while in barracks are to provide management of medical modules in order to support 2 Medical Brigade in the provision of the JEFFH and allowing delivery of
equipment at readiness for task. As a ward 2IC, I manage equipment under the Unit Equipment Care Directive ensuring the department is ready in order to deploy wherever the JEFFH is
required.
Once we completed
Corporal Johnson
building the hospital complex I worked on the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Here I am a custodian, maintaining and managing departmental equipment as well as ordering resupplies and managing any damages.
Once the department receives patients my job expands to include my HCA duties as well as looking after patients with compassion, respect and dignity, helping with all elements of personal care, ensuring cleanliness and patients safety. I record clinical measurements as well as follow infection prevention control and manual handling policy. In the event of a MMI there is need of a manpower surge to support patient care. In these situations I am called forward to the Emergency Department to fulfil extra tasks such as being a runner, scribe or clinical aid.
