Provision of Allotments
The announcement in January 2017 of the fourteen garden village sites
to be built across England will total 48000 new homes. These are not extensions of existing small villages but distinct new places with their
own community facilities. The NAS are working hard with developers and planning authorities to try and ensure that new allotments are created within these new developments. The new villages will receive about £6 million in government funding over two years to help deliver the projects and a further £1.4 million for the development of Garden Towns and seven of these have already been announced.
Many people are now realising the bene ts of a healthy diet combined with exercise particularly in view of the increased obesity found in school children today. The NAS are working together with other organisations to promote the health and wellbeing advantages of allotments, many GP’s are beginning to understand that horticulture can have a big impact on both lifestyle and community factors. Allotments greatly improve health and quality of life thus helping in many ways to reduce the country’s nancial challenges in treating such conditions as mental health, obesity, physical inactivity ageing and social isolation.
Amateur Liaison Group –
Health and Safety Executive
(HSE)
This is a relatively small but important committee who meet twice a year from the Chemical Regulation Division of the HSE, there are representative from other similar organisations to the NAS, the Horticultural Trades Association, and the Crop Protection Association. Information produced by this group can be obtained on www.hse.gov.uk/pesticides/user-areas/garden-home.htm
On this website you can check whether you can still use chemicals you have stored from a data case, there is information for Allotment Societies buying pesticides in bulk.
The NAS in conjunction with the Crop Protection Association and Water UK, have produced a lea et on the Safe Use and disposal of Garden Care Chemicals which has been written especially for allotment holders. A copy of this lea et is available on our website.
