Cadets support
Help for Heroes
By SSI Samantha Atkin
On Saturday, June 15, 2024, the cadets and adult volunteers from Waltham Detachment, E Company, demonstrated outstanding community engagement by participating in the Tesco National Collection Weekend.
Their efforts were dedicated to raising funds for Help for Heroes, a registered charity which provides vital support to veterans, service personnel, and their families.
Help for Heroes is committed to offering comprehensive support to those who have served in the Armed Forces and their families. Through various programmes and services, the charity ensures that veterans and service personnel receive the help they need to lead fulfilling lives.
Waltham Detachment spent the day at Tesco Cleethorpes, actively engaging with shoppers and encouraging donations for the Help for Heroes collection, in addition to engaging in conversation with the local community about the Army Cadet Force and its work in the community. This hands-on approach not only helped raise essential funds for the charity
but also fostered a sense of community and awareness about the charity's mission and the ACF.
Staff Sergeant Instructor Samantha Atkin, detachment commander, said: “We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who stopped to speak to us, and for those who donated.” She went on to say “The ethos of the detachment is to give back where we can, and I am so proud of the efforts of the cadets who took part in this event”.

  Hedon Penny Throwing and
Mayor Maker event: A tradition
of community and celebration
By 2Lt Sharon Barr
On 23 May 2024 in a display of local tradition and community spirit, two cadets from the Hedon detachment, Cadets Maia Everingham and Tyler Hartley, had the honour of standing as Guard of Honour for Councillor Colin Billany, the 677th Mayor of Hedon, during the annual Penny Throwing Event.
This historical event, which dates back to a time when mayors would bribe voters and then reward their supporters post-election, has evolved into a family-friendly celebration. Today, it
symbolises unity and festivity as the
new Mayor, along with civic leaders and their guests, throw pennies into the streets for eager children to collect.
Prior to the commencement of the Penny Throwing, Major Richard Lenton, Officer Commanding A Company escorted a specially invited guest from the Company to a special audience
with the Mayor and where SI Cassie North was promoted to Staff Sergeant Instructor.
Following the main event, a celebratory meal was hosted for the Mayor and invited guests. SSI Cassie North, commander of the Hedon Detachment, attended and graciously chose 2Lt Sharon Barr as her guest, in recognition of the support provided by Mona House to the Hedon detachment.
2Lt Sharon Barr, Detachment Commander Mona House Detachment said: “It was great event filled with tradition, community, and joy. We are proud of our cadets and thankful for the continued support from our civic leaders, it was a great to be invited to attend and be part of the event”.
