was also a mummified pygmy shrew in the
neck of a soda water bottle, an ostrich egg and an iron-age quern stone used to grind corn. He caught a perch in the gravel pit which he kept in an aquarium, training it to feed from his hand. When it died, he learned taxidermy skills and had another exhibit!
Wally died at the Manor House in Chancery Lane aged 81. His name is remembered on a sign in the area behind his old shop, now redeveloped as housing and named Jacques’s Yard.
Still remembered by some, this very short item is in tribute to a wholly remarkable man who was very much at the forefront of technology and invention during his days.
Since my item I have received pictures of Thrapston Mill and the Bridge Hotel before and after becoming a hotel. My grateful thanks to Carol and Adrian – your pictures will appear in one of my local history talks and probably in one of these ‘Glances’.
