 Approaching the summit

courses at CCAT including CPD a number of like minded walking friends are around the country with one in particular, Lennie Cowieson of 1 Highlanders ACF, not far from the Cairngorms, so a plan was hatched to walk at least one day together and take guidance from local knowledge for other possible mountain days. On arrival at Culloden Moor Caravan site contact was made and Lennie suggested a
gentle walk on the following day as the weather was expected to be really good. Having been conned by this kind of suggestion a couple of years earlier for a short walk which turned out to be 28 km and two Munros, a certain amount of scepticism was called for!

After more than nine months of walking on the flat in the East Riding of Yorkshire the Northern Corries and Cairngorm were somewhat of a change and some reservations considered but it was soon decided that
if the route was not tried then an opportunity would
be missed. In terms of safety there were numerous routes back off the plateau if the weather had proved less than friendly and there was one advantage that
a coffee shop appeared on the route at the end. As it happened all misgivings were soon dispelled as the weather, after a foggy start in the valley bottom turned into bright sunshine and light breezes all day. The walk was superb and all parties thoroughly enjoyed it.
On the summit of Sgor Gaoith,
and yes it was pretty windy
Looking down on Loch Eanaich from the summit
of Sgor Gaoith – about 600 metres of drop!
