MIRFIELD AIR CADETS COMMEMORATE REMEMBRANCE DAY IN LOCK-DOWN
Remembrance Day 2020: The Nation managed to commemorate the day despite the constraints of the Covid-19 pandemic, it meant though that there were few actual events. One of only six officially sanctioned Remembrance Day events was held
in Mirfield. This small West Yorkshire town has a reputation once reported in the national press as: “traditionally the biggest Remembrance Day parade has been organised by the British Legion branch of Mirfield West Yorkshire which attracts thousands of people every year” – sadly not this year.
Instead of the normal large parade and service supported by thousands the town saw only a short service at the War memorial in Ings Grove Park, with few participants and only about 80 spectators. Disappointed that they could have no participation in this year’s event the staff and cadets of 868 (Mirfield) Squadron Air Cadets decided they would make their own tribute and prepared a recorded commemo- ration which was released onto social media in the area at 14.00 hours on Remembrance Sunday, the time of the normal parade.
The Squadron’s presentation was in the form of a service lasting about 8 minutes led by the Squadron Chaplain, Rev’d Christine Shedd, and included:
• Introduction by the Squadron Commander, Flight Lieutenant Peter Doubell
• Reading by various cadets of “In Flanders Fields” a poem by John McCrae
• The Exhortation, again read by cadets
• Two minutes silence featuring the Union
Standard and Squadron Banner dipped in salute and pictures of cadets and staff paying their respects
• Dedication by the Squadron Chairman, James
