Jim Wharam
Competition 2020
“Every year B Company holds an inter-detachment competition, and this year was no different. The Jim Wharam Competition, named after a previous RSM of the County, sees cadets from all detachments within the Company going head-to-head in a series of challenging yet fun and competitive stands. Due to the circumstances this year the competition was run a bit differently, delivered over Zoom where 7 teams competed against each other in stands covering APC military subjects and a non-APC stand run by the cadet CSM. Stands included Skill at Arms, Drill and Military Knowledge, First Aid, Navigation and Fieldcraft.
The competition was run on Saturday 12th December and cadets from Cottingham, Goole, Hymers, Middleton, Pocklington, Signals, Wenlock and Wolfreton all signed in to take part.
After a close competition two teams finished in equal first position, after completing a tie break challenge and the winning team being awarded an extra 10 bonus points, Team Goolock (a mixed team of cadets from Goole and Wenlock) took pole position and won the overall competition with Wolfreton close behind in second position.
Major Tim Troughton, Officer Commanding B Company, said “I believe it was important for us to be able to deliver the competition despite the current circumstances for us to try and maintain a sense of normality where we can, this was only achievable because of the enthusiasm, commitment and hard work of the adult volunteers and Cadet CSM who worked hard to pull the competition together. TOMMY 10K
Sergeant Luke Wood and Corporal Tom Hook from Middleton Detachment, B Company have taken part in the Tommy 10K. For the Tommy 10k challenge, they are completing a 10k TAB every day for 10 days to raise funds for the RBLI (Royal British Legion Industries). The Tommy 10k was called Tommy
as this is what German soldiers shouted across no man’s land, if they wished to speak to a British Soldier.
Their goal was to raise £150.
Not only have they achieved this target, but they are also still continuing to raise funds.
Sgt Wood said “Corporal Hook and I are doing the Tommy 10k for the Royal British Legion.
We both chose to complete our fundraiser together and selected the special forces challenge which consists of doing 10k for 10 days. We also decided to add 15kg to our daysacks to raise more funds. The reason as to why we decided to do the Tommy 10K for the RBLI is because we wouldn’t be able to pay our normal respects to our Veterans and HM Armed Forces as we normally attend a Remembrance parade. So, we both thought what better way to show
Tom, left and Luke, right
our respect by doing something that’s hard to do and will require us to be resilient. To keep going to raise funds for disadvantaged Veterans whether it be disability, health condition or social welfare need."
Everyone at Middleton Detachment would like to congratulate them on completing their 10k.
