Appeal Project
– 11th November 2020
Over the fourteen days up to
Remembrance Sunday, members
of A Company were on a mission
to raise funds for the Royal
British Legion. They decided to
undertake a sponsored 'walk'
and initially travel (by walking,
running and/or cycling in their
local areas) the equivalent
distance from John O'Groats
to Land’s End. This was done
so quickly that the 'walk' was
then extended to the Cenotaph
in London, then extended to the
Somme Memorial in Thiepval...
before finally heading home to
A Company Headquarters in
Northallerton. Instead of the
original target of 874 miles, in
only a fortnight, A Company's
members travelled an incredible total distance of...1895.6 miles!
The efforts of the Adult Volunteers and cadets of A Company raised an amazing £654, which went on to benefit the Royal British Legion by almost £760 when GiftAid was added.
Project Coordinator, Company Training Officer, Captain Ben Porter had this to say to all of those who supported the project, "Well done to all who took part. You should all be extremely impressed with yourselves and your Company. You have accom- plished a tremendous task as a team, and done yourselves and your company proud!"
He continued, "The amount we have raised for the Royal British Legion will help them with financial, social, and emotional support they provide for those who have served."
 A COMPANY CADET ADVANCES...ONLINE!
by SI Lewis Wilde
After face-to-face training in our County was suspended in March 2020, our cadets and Adult Volunteers transitioned to online training, using facilities such as Google Classrooms and Zoom.
All of the cadets quickly adapted to the new normal of this form of training. Over the next few months, they made the most
of this opportunity to continue to progress in their training, achieving subject passes and earning APC Star badges.
A great example of a cadet progressing during this challenging period is A Company’s Cadet Sgt Megan Gotts. This outstanding Northallerton Detachment cadet has now passed her 4-star certification, and is pictured with her new 4-star badge.
Sgt Gotts has been in the ACF for over three years now and has made speedy progress during this time. Northallerton Detachment Commander, 2Lt Brent Middleton-Armer, said: “Sgt Gotts is a dedicated and hard-working cadet who is a great asset to Northallerton Detachment, with her endless enthusiasm and creative leadership style."
Sgt Gotts particularly excels in First Aid and chose it as one of her 4-star progressive subjects, in addition to Fieldcraft and Drill. Before the second national lockdown, she was also working towards her Senior Cadet Instructor Cadre (SCIC). She hopes to complete this, along with the Cadet Leadership course, before finally achieving the pinnacle - the Master Cadet course at Frimley Park in Surrey. Looks like 2021
is going to be a busy and exciting year for this exemplary teenager!
A COMPANY CADET WINS NATIONAL ACF AWARD
A Company's Cadet Sergeant Rosie Nelson has received some great news - she has been awarded the Gerrish Certificate for Outstanding Volunteering!
The Gerrish Certificate for Outstanding Volunteering was established by Lieutenant Colonel Mike Gerrish, who was the chair
of the ACFA's Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) Advisory Panel prior to his retirement
from the Army Cadet Force. He believed that taking part in volunteering or service activities could have a real effect on local communities, with the benefits being felt by the providers, in addition to the recipients. The award aims to recognise this within the ACF, and to reward the efforts of our cadets and young Adult Volunteers.
Her Company Commander, Major Michelle Goodwin, said in her nomination: "From the onset of the pandemic, Sgt Nelson has worked above and beyond for the good and benefit of her fellow cadets. She decided to support others by giving advice on ways to keep a healthy mind. She posts regularly on her detach-
ment's Facebook group with mindfulness activities, and always encourages participation from, not only her detachment but the whole company. She knew, however, that she wanted to do more to help out, so she started making face masks for family and friends. This then moved onto to her donating them to her local care facilities, and has now become a 'mini enterprise'
as she is now making and selling them to raise money for the Royal British Legion."
The Commandant, Colonel Jim Greenlee, was extremely impressed by the actions of this young cadet and said, "Sergeant Nelson is a credit to herself, her family and to Yorkshire (North and West) Army Cadet Force in general. She has selflessly given up her own time to benefit the mental health and wellbeing of others. She exemplifies the dedication of the staff and cadets of Yorkshire (N&W) ACF and the Gerrish Award is the perfect certificate to acknowledge her outstanding efforts. It is with a warm heart that I congratulate everyone involved, especially Sgt Nelson and her family."
The certificate was awarded at the virtual ACF DofE Conference on Sat 12 December.
