 Themed Suppers
Throughout the year we have organised Themed Suppers on the first Friday of the month. These have proved to be very popular and we will continue to organise these suppers next year. In 2019, we have planned
a Burns Night in January, a Chinese New Year in February and a Valentines Supper. Sometimes the dates are different depending on the theme but generally, they will be on the first Friday of the month. They are great evenings to catch up with friends and fellow sailors. All suppers will be advertised
in the Events Programme and on the website. Please book online.
Dinghy and Yacht Fitting Out Morning Events
We held three Yacht and Dinghy Fitting Out Saturday morning events. Topics included Life Jacket inspections,
First Aid for Sailors, Diesel and outboard engine maintenance and VHF Refresher. This year we have chosen five Saturday mornings in March subjects include Racing rules, Preparation for sailing, Foils, Sail Trim and Life Jacket Inspection. We were surprised this year how many Life Jackets failed to meet the necessary requirements. It is so easy to check them so please take advantage of the free expert help and advice at SYC.
Happy Hour Curry Buffet Night
This is a new initiative, on the last Thursday of every month. Enjoy Happy Hour prices between1800 to 1900hrs and a delicious curry buffet. Food will be served until 2000hrs.

Winter Talks
During the Spring we had numerous
talks on a Friday evening. In January, we enjoyed a fantastic talk by Peter Waring ‘Race to Terra Australis’ which was a light-hearted tribute to the “Poms” who put Australia on the map. Peter took us on a journey into the discovery of Australia.
Richard Bray gave us a stunning talk
on the geology of the South Hams and
we have already booked him for Spring 2019. We learnt so much about the 400 million years of the Earth’s history around Salcombe but there is so much more
to learn. Richard produced fantastic photographs with the assistance of his family and Ollie the Labrador to illustrate the importance of the geology of the South Hams.
The Knots and Splicing workshop for cadets and members was a great success organised by Justin Jones from English Braids and Ian (Scud) Stewart from the Salcombe Boat Store. We started early to enable the cadets to attend and they all produced a splice which they proudly took home. The older members were so keen that many returned to the Chart Room to continue splicing after supper.
Tim Law had us captivated with his experiences in ‘Trying to go sailing’. We learnt so much and appreciate the dedication it takes to become a high
achieving sailor taking part in International events. Tim then inspired our cadets the following morning.
As we go to press a number of events have been organised for the remainder of 2018. Will Thomson’s talk entitled Tides and River Bores, followed by the Trafalgar Night Dinner, and a talk by SYC member Paul Ellis. After 5 years away departing on 29th September 2013, Firefly sailed out
of Salcombe and returned this August, after sailing 46,000 miles completing a circumnavigation. Paul will be talking about the highlights, mentioning a few low lights and giving an insight into what the long term, long distance blue water sailing is really like.
We have organised a number of very interesting talks for 2019, these include a talk by Mark Dowie on the RNLI celebrating Salcombe RNLI Anniversary and Richard Bray returns to reveal more interesting facts about the Geology of the South Hams.
Most of the talks will be in the Chart Room following an optional meal. Please view the Calendar on the website for specific times.
Please Note, we would be delighted if you know of anyone who has a passion or hobby they would like to share with SYC members, please contact Jules in the office manager@salcombeyc.org.uk
