When the vandalism to our wildlife area was inspected, the committee realised that the community garden, of which it was a part, would need a radical makeover and refurbishment at the same time.
It was decided to utilise the same programme of works and contractors to completely re-shape and re-think what we had and how to change it for the good of all of our plotholders. The dozer contractor came in and used his calfdozer to level the whole area. Our volunteers removed the remains of our wildlife pond – quite a feat when we saw the hole that it left.
A general brainstorming session resulted in many new ideas and suggestions, many
of which were costly and time consuming, and so were rejected. Over the soggy,
cold winter of 2023/4, lots of thinking was undertaken with the help of tea and biscuits in our newly refurbished community cabin. The units were donated by a generous benefactor and our fantastic volunteer carpenter repaired our damaged floor and wall, and then did the fixing.
Whilst only digging, by hardy souls,
was the best action on site, an old brick footpath was found buried under tons of junk and woodchip, deposited by a former management group. This has now been completely unearthed and makes a very
pleasant circular path around the central star. One of our committee, with a very
commercial bent, found a supplier of planting collars at a very reasonable cost and bought plenty to enhance the planters in the garden. Our treasurer, with an equally keen eye, found the design for an unusual layout for 12 of the planters and they now form a star shape in the middle of the site, all delightfully planted-up with a variety of flowers. The committee is so happy with the scheme that it has been entered into the ‘Britain in Bloom’ programme, organised by the RHS Bridgewater organisation.
Apart from the new planting, an aged rhododendron was located hidden in a derelict, rotten, timber raised bed. It now has a new home in a ground-level collar sitting near a hibiscus which had also been tucked away hidden for too long. Both plants are now much happier.
