This Allotment: Stories of Growing, Eating and
Nurturing
Edited by Sarah Rigby
An allotment. ‘A ‘10
pole’ space for the growing of fruit and vegetables. A health-giving, hear t-filling miniature kingdom of carrots, courgettes and callaloo. A microcosm for our societies at large as people claim their ‘patch’ and guard it fiercely, but also of welcoming arms, gifted gluts and new recipes from across the seas.
They are places of resilience, resistance and freedom. They are blowsy dahlias, cricket on the radio, buzzing bees and the wisdom of weeds and seeds. This Allotment brings together thirteen brilliant writers in a glorious celebration of these entirely unique spaces: plots that mean so much more than the soil upon which they sit.

PATRON
His Majesty The King announces continuation as Royal Patron for the National Allotment Society.
The National Society of Allotment and Leisure Gardeners is deeply honoured that His Majesty King Charles III will continue in his role as our Royal Patron.
King Charles has always had a connection with the grow your own movement, and
a passion for gardening, organic food production and environmental issues. His dedication to promoting and protecting the UK’s enduring traditions, such as allotment gardening, make him the ideal ambassador and patron for our Society.
King Charles began an organic venture on the Duchy of Cornwall’s Home Farm (part of the Highgrove Estate) in 1985, turning it into a completely organic farming system. This innovative and successful venture demonstrates the vision, dedication and organic principles held byThe King throughout his lifetime.
His Majesty’s penchant for locally grown food also led to the introduction of what he calls a climatarian diet which “encourages people to choose foods that have a reduced environmental impact and includes recipes that are plant and meat-based.” A climatarian diet prioritises the environment by taking note of how foods are produced, processed and shipped to their final destinations.
King Charles became a patron of the National Allotment Society in 2011
and Mike Farrell, Chair for the Society, commented:“Following a review of Patronages, to mark the first anniversary of His Majesty’s Coronation, we are extremely grateful and delighted that His Majesty King Charles III has confirmed his continued support. His deep passion for gardening, commitment to environmental causes,
and steadfast dedication to preserving the UK’s rich traditions, make him an invaluable advocate for our mission. It is hoped that the Patronage of His Royal Highness will help to create greater awareness of the allotment movement and attract more support for its valuable work.”
We would like to extend our gratitude to His Majesty for his continuous support since he was the Prince of Wales.
