P. 4
Foreword from the
Station Commander
Wing Commander Keith Slack
This time last year I wrote a foreword to Eagleye that focussed on the following themes: selflessness, togetherness, comradery and mindfulness. I felt that these 4 words encapsulated the articles that made up the Autumn/Winter edition in 2019. Well, how things have changed and what a difference a year makes! I think it safe to say that this year has been unlike any other and I imagine many of us are looking ahead to 2021. It has indeed been uniquely challenging as we have all responded to immense change caused by the Covid pandemic. We have all been on our own unique journey as each of us navigate an ever-changing series of government restrictions and guidance.
The articles presented in this edition of Eagleye demonstrate that whilst much has changed, a lot has also stayed the same. The themes of selflessness, togetherness, comradery and mindfulness are as relevant today as they were a year ago. The articles on charities and the recognition through Stn Cdr’s commendations demonstrate that selflessness is as prevalent today as it was a year ago. People have committed huge amounts of time, energy and money to support their friends, families, communities and good causes. Despite the requirements for isolation, strict lockdowns and social distancing, the articles on community engagement also demonstrate that we can still be together, with our families, or connected virtually through a common focus or event. It has been different and challenging without doubt, but we are
stronger in the face of adversity when we come together, in whatever way we are able. Comradery is also still alive and well – this edition includes numerous articles covering ceremonial and community events, including the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Britain and the 65th anniversary of RAF Wyton being awarded the Freedom of the Town of Huntingdon. The Wyton Area Voluntary Band (WAVB) has also helped to maintain a sense of togetherness and comradery through their performances and online engagements.
So, I come to mindfulness. I wrote this time last year about a catchphrase from one of the articles that stated: ‘we live in an age of distraction’. The article emphasised that in such an ‘age of distraction’, we needed to focus on mindfulness, use techniques to relax and focus, and remember the importance of physical and mental wellbeing. Again, what a difference a year makes. The ‘age of distraction’ may not seem to apply to 2020 at all, as isolation, lockdown, social distancing and the closure of hospitality venues became the norm. In some regards, distraction became absent. It became more important to separate ourselves from unwanted distractions and focus on establishing and introducing healthy distractions that filled the silence, reduced anxiety and promoted calm and resilience. Just like the other 3 themes, the importance of mindfulness has been reaffirmed during the reaction to the pandemic but in a very different way.
As we look forward to 2021, and more near-term the upcoming festive season, I
urge everyone to focus on these 4 important themes. There are glimmers of hope moving into next year as improved testing and the prospect of highly effective vaccines hopefully become a reality. If so, the togetherness and comradery that we all seek might return to something resembling what used to be regarded as normal. We will need to remain vigilant, look after ourselves and each other. I wish you all the very best for the remainder of 2020 and look forward in hope towards 2021.
I hope you enjoy this unique edition of Eagleye. Stay safe.
