Southern
Potato Days 2018
In the picturesque village of Urchfont, near Devizes in Wiltshire, the Gardening Society was the host to a Pennard Plants Potato Day on 27 January. Our stand in the entrance foyer drew a lot of attention, particularly from people who were keen gardeners and did not know of us.
At the end of February, Iain Crawford and I again ventured into
the South West Region to promote the NAS at the Frome Potato Day and Seed Swap, organised by Incredible Edible Frome. The event attracted quite a cross-section of gardeners and potential gardeners. Among those we spoke with were new allotment holders who, having waited over a year for a plot, just wanted to know how to get started and there were also those who, through failing health, had given up their plot but were continuing to enjoy fresh vegetables grown in pots on their patio. Many visitors we spoke with saw the benefits of NAS Membership and asked for application forms so that they could consider becoming NAS Members.

Dear Allotment and Leisure Gardener,
Thank you for an interesting magazine. It is convenient to get an individual one as I miss the one here in Brightlingsea quite often.
My allotment is not like the ones portrayed here in your magazine; mine is a bit haywire. But I really enjoy planning and digging in. I love the slow worms in my compost bin and the toads and frogs, although they don’t seem enough to eat the slugs. A hedgehog would be lovely, but none so far.
I pick this and that all year which suits our eating – mainly stir fry.
This season I intend to plant more flowers for the bees. Very pleased with my gladioli, very French. Good pear harvest, lovely- they were not enough! Water was a problem, as it’s very dry here. Hard work but husband is allowed to help sometimes.
Well that’s about it before I bore you; Happy Allotmenteering!
Penelope Darby
