QARANC Awards and Prizes 2018 and Glover Lecture
The Glover Lecture 2018 was combined with the annual QARANC Awards and Prizes presentation which was held in the recently refurbished Rawlinson Hall lecture theatre at Robertson House, Camberley.
The Glover Lecture is an
annual event where an invited
speaker gives a presentation
to regular, reserve and retired
members of the Corps in
memory of Lieutenant Colonel
Gill Glover. She trained at
Guy’s Hospital qualifying in
1964 and then joined the Territorial Army in 1972, ending her TA career as Matron of 308 Field Hospital. During her 22 years in the TA she was passionate about enhancing training for combat medical technicians. After she retired she joined the Millbank Branch of the Association and was secretary of the branch for seven years. The speaker this year was Captain Nics Wetherill RAMC, who spoke eloquently and enthusiastically about her expedition to Antarctica with a team of women drawn from the Army. We could only sit there in July’s baking heat wondering what it would be like to feel cool again! For Nics it was the realisation of a long-held ambition, and we marvelled at her skill and inspiration. We hope that Nics will be able to write a short article on her achievement for the next edition of the Gazette.
Along with the lecture, a prize in Gill Glover’s name is awarded to a Reserve nurse. This year it was awarded to Sergeant Catherine Pounder of 205 Field Hospital. Cath has recently become a trustee of the Association and with a particular interest in military nursing history she is a member of the Heritage and Chattels Sub-committee. You may wonder why Cath is wearing Highland Dress in the photographs. As a champion piper who appears regularly at the Edinburgh Festival, Cath agreed to pipe-in Colonel (Retd) Karen Irvine

RRC to her retirement dinner that took place the same evening. There is something haunting and beautiful about the sound of the pipes, and I for one felt very moved by Cath’s performance.
The Burroughs Cup was donated in memory of the late Lieutenant Colonel Margaret Burroughs, a former Matron of the Royal Victoria Hospital, Netley. It is awarded to the QARANC Registered Nurse (Mental Health) who has contributed most in the field of mental health nursing to enhance patient care.
