                                  A Trip to Buckingham Palace
One of our younger gardeners,
well he was once, was invited to Buckingham Palace to receive his Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award. Some of this award was achieved, pre-covid, when he assisted an older gardener on our site, by doing what once would have been called the “heavy lifting,”
in other words, the digging, weeding, and planting. Needless to say, there is an awful lot more than just gardening involved, but well-done Jordan Hill on getting your gold award.
He took his mother Rachael, with
him who had a whale of a time wandering around the palace gardens, photographing hoverflies; yes, it is that Rachael, the hoverfly aficionado, and she and Jordan by the lake, photographed two “unknown” hoverflies. Well, they
are not in her hoverfly bible, and she is usually right. Well, Ma’am did you know that you have some rare species in the grounds of Buckingham Palace?
This probably needs to be verified by respected scientists and entomologists, but I believe Rachael Hill.
Thank goodness we are now in the season of allotment plant sales; these are a great way of generating funds for sites. Everyone on an allotment can usually contribute; let’s face it, we all sow too many vegetables and plenty of bedding plants. It is a good idea to set some aside for the annual plant sale.
This year I have too many trays of
mesembryanthemums; many will be
used to decorate the NW stands at the
Coop Festival in Accrington Town Hall
on Saturday 25th June. Any members in
the area, please, come in and introduce
yourself. Thursday
And finally, our appearance at Tatton Park which was four days of fun and flowers, talking about composting, recycling and reusing. We still have a few vacancies for that so if you can come along and lend a hand, that would be great. The Tatton Show is from Thursday 20th to Sunday 24th July.
Lastly, I must apologise to all our readers for our absence in the last magazine.
We have a second meeting in the Grosvenor Museum in Chester on 9th July, all about Gardening Economically. I will be “borrowing” some ideas from our President, Phil Gomersall; nothing like a Yorkshireman for money saving ideas.
