This year we are celebrating the Shared Harvest from our precious plots. There comes a time in every growing season when plants produce more crops than any plotholder can freeze, pickle or jam and generous allotment holders begin to arrive at work with baskets of plums, armfuls of rhubarb and Tupperware full of green beans. Many of you have also shared your experience of donating food to local food banks with us; thank you for your contributions; there are several case studies and some good practice tips on the website. As we all know, growing, cooking, eating and sharing tasty home-grown food is just one benefit of allotment life.
By opening up our sites and letting
the community know what a valuable contribution allotments make to Public Health and Wellbeing, it helps to protect them by enlisting the backing of the wider community. A recent
survey of Brighton and Hove residents revealed that only 1.5% of Brighton residents rated allotments as being of value. We, the allotment community, need to change that view. So, next year let’s get even more sites open and more people supportive of our movement!
