Our Hotbin is a firm family
favourite – and saves us money!
My husband, like most men, is notoriously difficult to buy presents for. However, the one thing that he does love, is growing his own vegetables in two large, oak sleeper raised beds that we installed a few years ago.
Every year he proudly brings potatoes, carrots, parsnips, leeks and other veg into the kitchen from his garden, but he would always moan that he couldn’t get his hands on good compost to dig into the soil.
So when I saw an advertisement for the Hotbin in Allotment and Leisure Gardener Magazine, just a month before his birthday, I was over the moon. It was to be a genius present – killing two birds with one stone – solving his compost needs and getting rid of my kitchen waste. In East Northants, where we live, our council doesn’t take garden waste for free, we have to pay for its removal, so Hotbin has also saved me lots of money, as it takes 100% of our grass cuttings, weeds etc.
I’ve never been a fan of composting, as the thought of tempting rats and other vermin into our garden sends shudders down my spine, but this way, the waste is completely sealed in, so no problem!
But it’s not just my husband and I that are thrilling with it, my son
does lots of work at school about recycling and looking after the environment, so he loves running outside and putting things in the Hotbin. He said: “It doesn’t matter how much I put in it, I can never fill it up! The contents just keep shrinking!”.
The completely organic compost it makes, is superb quality and easy to dig out from the bottom of the bin and transfer to the beds for an awesome soil. It’s so simple, dig it out from the bottom, then replace the door, strap it in place and then start filling from the top again. The only thing you ever need to do, is add some
shredded paper and keep an eye on the temperature gauge from time to time.
I can’t recommend this product highly enough. I think everyone should have one.
