There is talk of a Green Recovery, combining the need for providing new employment opportunities with the need to effectively provide the means of combatting climate change. On the whole the public in general is onboard with the urgent need for coping with pending environmental disaster and the pressures put on governments to actually do something, is growing all the time. If this pressure, which from an allotment perspective is manifested as an increased and continual demand for allotments, does bear fruit, then surely allotments as a whole will benefit as part of the overall move to
a greener perspective which is more nature and people orientated and less driven by economic imperatives? This is a long-term hope. The UK’s exit
from Europe will cut us off from a lot of green support and legislation and the problems of a post-Brexit world will probably dominate agendas when/if
the virus recedes. However, the need to deal effectively with climate change will not be going away any time soon and allotments will have a role to play. While the virus has felt apocalyptic at times, and nobody would wish it to arrive, it has hopefully hastened the long- delayed serious addressing
of climate change and maybe, just maybe, allotments will benefit from being on the coat tails of this movement.
