Leicester Gardeners Help Infirmary – 15 tons of Potatoes Sent Last Year
Fifteen tons of potatoes were sent by Leicester Allotees to the Royal Infirmary last year. During 1928 the total was nine tons. The potatoes, entered in the various competitions, were sent to the Institution after judging. This - and many other interesting facts – was revealed at the annual meeting of Leicester and District Allotment Council in the Council Chamber of the Town Hall last night.
The Lord Mayor preside supported by Mr. J.G. Pickard, chairman of the Infirmary Board, Mr. H. Johnson House Governor, Mr. C.A. Smith Hon secretary Leicester and District Allotment Societies, Mr. A.W. Giles secretary National Allotment Society and representative of
many allotment societies. Mr. J.G. Pickard praised the allottees for their help. The Infirmary had been saved a considerable amount of money by these gifts.
SUCCESSFUL COMPETITORS
The hon secretary reported that the competitions had been attended by a greater success than formerly, but they were not satisfied yet. The Infirmary needed 70 tons of potatoes per year. And when it was considered that 300 tons of potatoes are grown annually on city allotments, to raise 70 tons for the Infirmary was not an insuperable task. A women’s section was introduced last year, and a trophy had been presented by Cllr
Mrs Swainston. The Pickard Cup for bulk was also an innovation.
