ENDING THE TRAINING YEAR INSTYLE
By SI Cassie North
Over the 8th to the 10th of March, A Company embarked on their last weekend of the training year. During the camp the basic cadets, for many of whom it was their first camp, went onto Driffield training area to partake in fieldcraft for the morning and spent the afternoon completing their basic Signals course.
The 1 Star cadets had a full weekend of skill at arms, during this time they learnt how to use the GP Rifle safely, for many of these cadets it was the first time they had handled or even seen this weapon. The 2 and 3 Star cadets had navigation training and testing to help them prepare for the upcoming expedition weekend. For the 2 Stars this training involved in classroom and en route lessons, followed by route card creation and a 3.8km walk on the Sunday.
2Lt Sharon Barr, Platoon Commander 2 Star,
and her staff are proud of the work achieved by the cadets. They worked hard for the entire camp, and all passed their 2 Star navigation. The 3 Stars also had in classroom and en route lesson, but in addition, took part in a night navigation, where they spent part of the evening navigating in the training area in
the dark and having a 7.2km walk on the Sunday morning.
At the end of the weekend Major Richard Lenton, Officer Commanding A Company, asked the cadets how they felt about the weekend. There was a consensus of yeses to if they enjoyed the weekend and many stating their favourite part was weapons, fieldcraft
Their favourite part was weapons, fieldcraft and even the night navigation
and even the night navigation.
As always, A Company ended the weekend with
awards. Major Lenton presented Cadet Lance Corporal Charlotte Skilbeck, Cadet Corporals Shaun Houlden, Elliot Robinson, Seanna Thornton and Zach Blake-Barnard with their First Aid at Work certificates.
Cadets Thomas McDowall, Laura Letchford, Thomas Evins and Harry Green received their basic pass certificates. Cadet Arther Gawthorpe received his 1-star certificate and Cdt LCpl Summer Tingle received her 2-star certificate.
It isn’t just cadets who receive certificates though, as SI Hannah Cook and Major Lenton both received their First Aid at Work certificates.
The final presentation of the weekend was that Major Lenton had a staffing change to announce; the company is sadly saying goodbye to Captain Hollie Troughton, who is moving to B Company as Training Officer. She will be greatly missed by her A Company family, but we look forward to Lt Donna Rea joining us as our new Training Officer.
