Packing – a tricky job, an unbalanced pirogue is a recipe for disaster
experience I’ve had on exercise and the lessons taught during basic training. The practicalities of packing a Bergen, waterproofing your kit, taking care of your feet and boots, even cooking in the field, have all been taught and developed in the Army. However, having used the theory in real life, I now have a wealth of experience, of the daily routine of wet-dry drills, of tracking animals based on their spoor and signs, of eating tinned sardines and rice for weeks at a time, just wishing I was lucky enough to have a ‘rat-pack’. All of which is directly transferrable back into military life, enabling me to work better in the field and deal with harsh conditions.
The conservation of wildlife and wilderness is something that is at crisis point. There are so many projects, places and species that need help. The skills and experience we gain from our military service have so much potential utility to conservation projects around the world. There are so many opportunities and I

would implore anyone who, in reading this article, thinks they would like to help conservation – to enquire, to ask and to get involved – conservation needs all the help it can get. You do not need to be a vet; increasingly projects are using working dogs for tracking poachers and detecting smuggled ivory. What they lack is the very experience and expertise that your reserve military experience has given you. Even without any animal experience, there are
innumerable similarities with the military skills we have and the skills that many projects and governments wish to teach their rangers, or failing that, logistics, road building, heavy machinery use, weapon systems, tracking, any number of skills you use every day in your military career. Do yourself a favour, put the skills you’ve gained from the military to good use, and gain experience to enhance your military career in return.
