  British Association of Critical
Care Nurses (BACCN) Military
Region Wins Awards
Brighton is best known for its sandy beaches and seaside attractions but on the 10-12 September 2012, it was host to the British Association of Critical Care Nurses (BACCN) International Conference which was held in the International Conference Centre. This was a three day event delivering an exciting range of topics relevant to critical care nursing and included presentations, workshops, open discussion groups and poster presentations.
Prior to the event members were encouraged to produce poster presentations to display on a variety of different topics. The BACCN Military Region submitted a poster on the Region’s activity over the past year and our contribution to the BACCNs mission of promoting excellence in patient care.
It was great to see so many Military Region committee and members attend the event. There were representatives from all three services and from many different MDHU’s allowing the military ITU cadre to catch up, as well as enjoy the scientific programme.
For members attending the full conference package it included a dinner evening on the 12 September 2012 with a ‘Best of British’ theme
Military Region Committee with Regional Award and Sponsor Pulse
at the Hilton Hotel on the sea front. The function was decked out with Union Jack bunting and flags, a very apt setting when later in the evening the Military Region was presented with the’ Region of the year’ award, and Capt Chris Carter was presented with ‘Regional member of the year’ award. This was quite an unexpected honour; as there are not many regions within the BACCN who have won both awards in the same year. Representing the committee to
collect the awards were Capt Chris Carter, Capt Debbie Harvey, Lt (Navy) Lloyd Cantilon, Flt Sgt Wanda Hughes and CPONN Sue Jefferies.
The awards presented were attractive star shaped crystal engraved trophy and cash prize of £250 which has been reinvested into the regional funds. These awards have raised the profile of Defence Critical Care Nursing amongst our civilian peers and the excellent work being undertaken by the Regional Committee in developing and supporting practice wherever Regular and Reserve members practice.
It was a great honour for the committee to win these awards and the Committee has enthusiastically commenced planning for 2013. For more information please visit the Military Region website at www. baccn.org.uk
