This year marks the centenary of Strawberry Island allotments in Doncaster. Historically Strawberry Island in the River Don was part of the Wheatley Hall Estate of Sir William H. Cooke, who gave coal miners the right to garden on the island. The tenancy commenced on the 2nd February 1921.
In 1933 the whole of the Wheatley Hall Estate, including Strawberry Island, was sold to Doncaster corporation, who are still the landlords to this day. The allotments have been self-managed for many years by a committee, under the auspices of Strawberry Island Allotment Association. The site is 2.59 acres with 38 allotment plots all fully occupied with a current waiting list of 24.
Our allotmenteers come from a wide variety of backgrounds: teachers, chartered engineers, nurses, solicitors, farm labourers, postmen, drivers, and many other trades including retirees. We have a wide age range and a good social and ethnic mix, who all contribute and help one another if, and when, needed.
The variety of vegetables and flowers cultivated on the allotments is much as you would expect on any modern allotment site, from the mundane to the exotic. If it can be grown in Britain, it can be grown on the island. One of our members, Sandra Faulkner, is attempting to grow bananas in her polytunnel this year.
