National Allotments Week Plotting for the Future
National Allotments Week 2021 - 9 August till 15 August
This year we are celebrating the contribution that allotments make to a sustainable future – but you may well be wondering what that means.
Sustainability means meeting our own needs from existing resources without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. In addition to natural resources such as land, water, food etc., we
also need to be socially content and economically sound. Plotholders are very adept at caring for the land and being economical with resources, and allotments offer strong social benefits. We also protect allotment land for future generations to enjoy.
However, there is always room for improvement and during National Allotments Week, as part of our Virtual Show, we will be running a series of talks that look at sustainability issues pertinent to allotments. We will have
talks on Composting, Water Use, No-dig and Organic Growing. Garden Organic will be joining us to also offer their expertise in the use of peat-free composts, which does not behave in the same way as peat-based compost https://www.forpeatssake.org.uk/.
The winners in the Virtual Show categories will be announced during the week and feature on our YouTube channel and FB page. Check out our website for details on how to watch the talks and view the winners in the show categories.
We are looking forward to reading reports of any open days and events running this year in the next issue of the magazine.

Strulch – introduce the benefits of mulching to your plot!
My husband Geoff invented Strulch at Leeds University.
We have been selling it since 2005 and it has grown in popularity because it is a quality organic product with a neutral pH that works on all soil types. It can be used anywhere in the garden including vegetables plots. Strulch works by blocking light which is needed for germination and the texture of Strulch together with added minerals deters slugs and snails.
Add to bare soil to stop weed germination and around plants when they reach a good size. We sell in bulk 12, 25 and 48 bags and you can buy 100 litre bags from our stockists.
Find out about Strulch on our website – www.strulch.co.uk or give me a call (01943 863610).
Happy cultivating. Jackie Whiteley.
