22 CRUISING REPORTS
On our first morning we were greeted with bright skies and sunshine. The harbour master had recommended the fish and chips at the Ferry Boat Inn the night before, so we decided to head over to the north side of the river. With an early afternoon high water, we would have enough time to have lunch ashore and a walk. After dragging the dinghy up the beach, there is no official dinghy landing place here, we headed off
on the South West Coast Path for a short walk to Durgan beach at the foot of Durgan Gardens owned by the National Trust. We were rewarded with stunning views over the river right down to its mouth.
Lunch at the Ferry Boat Inn did not disappoint after returning along the coast
path. Nathan chose the fish and chips which he thoroughly enjoyed. I decided to have the seafood linguine topped with Sea Bass, which definitely ranks as one of the best seafood linguine I have ever had. Not only was the food delicious, but the location with its view over the river was very picturesque.
The next day saw us visiting the south side of the river to avail ourselves of the facilities at Helford River Sailing Club. After tying up on the club pontoon, we treated ourselves to a hot shower, followed by lunch at the sailing club’s restaurant. We sat out on the deck in the sunshine enjoying the panoramic view over the river. Later
we walked into the picturesque village of Helford and purchased some local Cornish
Yarl and Cornish Blue cheese from the local store. We enjoyed this later with a glass of wine on deck watching the sun go down.A perfect end to a lovely day.
Alas, this was also our last night on the river. The next day we had to start heading back East. With heavy hearts, we dropped the line to the buoy the next morning and headed out of the river in the sunshine.
No doubt we will return again and would highly recommend this beautiful corner of Cornwall. We won’t leave it seven years next time.
