Grateful for a pause in
the rain at our service
of Remembrance
On 2 November, the Midlands branch held their first Act of Remembrance at the National Memorial Arboretum (NMA).
With the threat of Storm Ciaran and heavy rain during our journey to the NMA, we feared we would have to dodge the downpour. But the rain eased as we made our way to the QARANC memorial and to our surprise and delight held off for the service.
After a brief introduction from Major Darren Illingworth (Branch Chair), Cpl Laud Afam-Adjei, a student nurse from DHE, led the Act of Remembrance. Though no bugler was present, the Last Post was still played thanks to the wonders of modern technology (a man with a mobile phone!) and a two minutes’ silence was held.
Wreaths were laid by Lt Col Alison Cripps on behalf of the Corps and Branch Vice-Chair Denise Carpenter on behalf of the Branch. After the service there was time for a walk around the NMA, some personal reflection and even a browse in the shop – a number of poppy teapots and cups were spotted heading to new homes! – before we gathered in the Founder’s Room for a fabulous high tea.
The conversation flowed and memories were shared for several hours, aided by delicious sandwiches, scones and cake. One of the highlights was having student nurse representatives as well as the ‘old and bold’ Corps members and their families, with the ages of those present ranging from nine to 81 years old. We hope to make the service will become an annual event for the Branch to enable QARANC members past and present to reflect and remember.
