‘Simulation of sliced hands, cut knees and chemical burns looked like the real thing’
WO2 Hayley Bowman and Pte Poppy Musgrave of Joint Hospital Group North, ran the first two-day casualty simulation training course in October. This was held in Catterick Garrison and was attended by members of the Royal Lancers, 3 Medical Regiment and Joint Hospital Group North.
A successful casualty simulation course uses various techniques and is an immersive but educational experience. It provides an opportunity to acquire and apply essential skills that can be effectively utilized in real-life situations. During the two-day course, participants cover a wide range of topics including pallor and bruising, blisters, burns, blood effects, silicon wound making, major trauma wounds, casualty card development, and simulation. This immersive training optimises preparation for real-life casualties and equips troops with essential training skills.
This course is run in a relaxed manner as training in a calm environment during peacetime and offers significant benefits for troops. It also allows for cohesion between personnel across different ranks and cap badges. The hands-on teaching style and practical engagement with the kit were highly appreciated by all attendees, resulting in enhanced preparedness and improved training outcomes, which all participants felt they could take away and improve training within their units.
The course has been a resounding success, enjoyed by all participants, and received positive feedback.
