A great experience, despite the results!
Dear Gazette,
The Joint Hospital Group South-East Women’s
Football Club travelled to Cyprus in October for a seven-aside competition called EXERCISE EXPISKYROS NIKE.
Our team consisted of eight players, made up of five Army nurses and three Royal Air Force personnel. For some of us it was a first-time playing competitive football.
Before leaving for Cyprus, we brushed up on the rules of the seven-aside game and spent our first couple of days in the country doing training and activities to build team cohesion.
The competition was run across two days in the style of a usual football league, where we played every team once and moved up and down a league table. The first game we played was a shock, as we crashed to 5-0 defeat, however as the next few games went by, we started working better as a team and scored some goals.
Despite finishing at the bottom of the table and winning the ‘Wooden Spoon’ trophy (at least we didn’t return empty handed), the competition was a great experience for all, and we look forward to competing again in the future.

Mission accomplished for Chris’ charity challenge
Dear Gazette,
Thank you for publishing
my article in the Autumn 2022
who has supported me with encouragement and donations for HighGround (www.highground-uk. org). During that time, I have seen a lot of my house and garden, but I have met many people who will be
friends for life. They know who they are because there are too many to name here.
If you have not yet got round to donating it is not too late and I know that every penny will be spent wisely to the benefit of those who have served our country and need our help today. Here is the link https:// localgiving.org/appeal/chris_

I am so pleased to have completed this Challenge in HIghGround’s 10th anniversary
year. What shall I do now?

In it I talked about my efforts to raise money
for the military charity HighGround (who provide horticultural therapy and employment in the land-based sector for veterans) by walking 1,000 miles.
On Monday 4 December, the ‘Determined Tortoise’ (as I called myself) crossed the finish line. Yes,
I have completed the challenge after three years and all with all sorts of health issues slowing me down. I have done it and raised £6000 to date!
I cannot thank adequately everyone
