Growing back in time...
Bygone issues of the Allotment & Leisure Gardener magazine
in 2006. This edition comprised of 36 pages compared with the 64 we print
today.
Watercolour paintings by David Marl A.R.C.A. were still the covers
of choice around this time and we do like
the colourful and humorous style of this particular edition.
David Gibbs (who sadly passed away in 2015) was doing a grand job as Editor at this time and Chairman’s Comments came from Allan Rees who reported that he had ‘been around and about visiting several areas’. His aim was to try and establish the feelings amongst plot holders as to how they envisage an allotment, both now and in the future...questions that we still ask today. Allan wasn’t surprised that there was a wide range of views and thought this was a good thing; he wrote, ‘if we agreed on all matters wouldn’t life be boring?’.
There were lots of regional
reports, tips and letters in this edition and companies advertising in the magazine, selling anything from fruit trees to electric tillers. Many of these advertisers remain with us today such as John McLauchlan Horticulture who changed their name in 2004 and are better known as Viresco (UK) Ltd. They have been established for 25 years
and continue to provide Humate and microbial to allotment associations, exhibition growers and keen gardeners.
This edition we are growing back 12 years to look at Issue 1 of 2004. It really doesn’t seem that long
ago but oh my, how
things have changed!
The magazine was still
predominantly black
and white throughout
at this time with a 16 page colour section in the middle and full colour covers. Full colour throughout was nally introduced
