Allotment Regeneration of Cumberland Avenue, Cadishead, Salford
In the mid-1980s the demand for allotments in Salford declined, causing the council to assess the provision of allotments within the city. The site at Cumberland Avenue, Cadishead was deemed to be surplus to requirements, and was eventually closed in the late 80s.
Twenty years on, the demand for allotments rose to such an extent that the council had to look again at the allotment situation within the city, as the number of people on the waiting lists far outweighed the number of available allotment plots. Demand was especially high in the Irlam and Cadishead area. Early in 2008, the council wrote to all the people on the waiting list in that particular area, and invited them to a meeting, with a view to forming a constituted group to move forward with the regeneration of the Cumberland Avenue site. The newly formed group, together with the council, set about their task later that year.
The first action was to consult the local residents, which was done by the committee. Thankfully, there were no objections.
The council managed to secure funding for a new fence, a composting toilet and a water supply. Plans were drawn up for a site containing fifteen plots, three storage bays and a car park. After a lengthy tendering process, a contractor was appointed to do the work. The work commenced in January 2010, and was finished in July.
Eight years on, Cumberland Avenue is a thriving and very popular site.
