Plans for National Allotment Week
are coming along famously - we will have a pop-up allotment and marquee outside the Guildhall. We are working in conjunction with Plymouth City Council’s ‘City of Service’ initiative called ‘Grow Share Cook’. One of their partners are “Food is Fun” who say “Food is Fun encourages people of all ages to explore food in a fun way to promote healthy eating for their future”. Another partner is Tamar Grow Local – a CIC with a blossoming Food Hub distributing and delivering in the Tamar Valley.
During National Allotment Week, we will be holding a Pots and Pans Amnesty – see the website for more details www. theplymouthshow.co.uk.
National Allotment Week launches at 10am on Monday 10th August, with
a display by the Harrowbarrows – a wheelbarrow display team. The theme
this year is ‘A Plot for all Ages’ transferring knowledge across generations. We are working with Plymouth Primary Schools to explore the link that horticulture can have with education and there will be a family area where children can explore food.
Local celebrity chefs will also be in attendance; more details about this can be found on the website mentioned above.
From noon there will be talks every two hours on different garden-related subjects in the main Guildhall where there will also be stalls, refreshments and demonstrations throughout the day.
We will also be running Plymouth Show on Wednesday 12th and Thursday 13th August and all NAS and NVS members and associate members can exhibit free of
charge. The Championship NVS Top Tray first prize is £25 and we are honoured to present an ‘Allotment Challenge Shield’ with a first prize of £40, in memory of Geoff Stokes who was Secretary of the Society from 1988 until 2010.
When the Plymouth Show finishes on Thursday 13th, our stand will remain in the plaza and become a part of the renowned Plymouth Flavour Fest until the evening of Sunday 16th.
Di Appleyard will be working with Billy Moore to hold an Allotment Officers’ Forum during the week.

Mail on Sunday Photo-shoot at Bell Hill Allotments, Bristol East
Many thanks to Steve, Rick and Fern from Bristol East Allotments who turned out on a cold snowy day to humour a photographer from the Mail on Sunday. The photographer wanted a picture of the NAS Marketing Co-ordinator with chickens, to illustrate
a piece about getting started on your plot. The article seems to have hit the cutting room floor but George, the photographer, sent over this image with a facetious comment about modelling opportunities – what could he mean? And yes, I have got chicken poo on my hand.
