Happenings in
Harrogate
I went along to Harlow Hill Allotments to watch the filming of our Plant Doctor, Aaron Hickman.
What a lovely site Harlow Hill is; I hadn’t visited this site since the opening of their composting toilet some years back (when a toilet on site was quite novel). That was when I was a Mentor with the Allotment Regeneration Initiative.
I managed a good long chinwag with Aaron at lunch break and later, after the filming, over a coffee at the nearby Horticap Bluebell Wood Nursery, a horticultural organisation run for students with all kinds of disabilities. If you ever visit RHS Harlow Carr call in at Horticap, it is only over the road.
Later in the month I went to visit the Harrogate Allotment Show in the lovely Valley Gardens at Harrogate. This is organised by the Harrogate District Allotment Federation; it was very well attended. Proceeds from this show go to a charity and this year it was the Ripon Museum, who also manage a heritage orchard in their grounds.
There was a splendid array of fruit and vegetables entered
in the show and an equally impressive display of gleaming trophies for the winners. Harlow Hill and Pine Street allotments had a stall at the show and numerous other organisations too. Unfortunately, the dreaded covid had struck and the brass band had to be cancelled.
Whilst I was perusing the stands I bumped into prominent member of the horticultural world, Martin Fish, garden writer and broadcaster who had been judging the fruit and vegetables, and we had a good natter.

 Have greenhouse, will travel...
One of our allotmenteers wanted to get her greenhouse from the other side of Rawdon Village in Leeds to the Victory Garden Allotment Site.
So, she mustered up some friends and walked it nearly half a mile through the streets of the village.
I’ll bet there were a few surprised looks on the way – it’s not every day you see a greenhouse trundling through the streets!
Where else could it be, but Yorkshire?
