Plotholders and Puppies
A beautiful dog, in his working vest, attracted Stapleford residents to a well-stocked stall selling vegetables and plants on Saturday 31st July, as part of the ‘Sustainable Stapleford’ event organised by Nottinghamshire’s Stapleford Town Council.
Created and run by an enthusiastic team of volunteers from Stapleford & District Garden Holders, with generous donations from several plotholders, sales raised £135.02, and with direct donations of £116.98, a total of £252.00 was raised towards Emily Cook’s aim to raise the £29,000 needed to train a Medical Detection Dog.
Emily, who hoped to graduate in medicine, took on a Stapleford allotment plot when a complex neurological condition causing sudden loss of consciousness and subsequent gradual recovery from paralysis, prevented her from continuing her promising education. Shortly afterwards her very new companion, a 6-month-old Hungarian Viszla puppy called Barna Kutya, spontaneously raised an alarm
a few minutes before she collapsed. He continued to do this so reliably that the family contacted the charity Medical Detection Dogs, whose sustained training means that Barna is now a fully qualified Assistance Dog, behaving impeccably while ‘on duty’ but always alert to Emily’s situation.
