AMS Ladies Golf Society Summer Meet
In amongst the showers of June, members of the Army Medical Services Ladies Golf Society (AMS LGS) gathered for the Summer meet at Tidworth Garrison Golf Course. A total of 12 ladies played at what is the second meet of the season, with some traveling from as far as Devon and the Midlands.
Tidworth Garrison Golf Club was founded in 1908 and is a private members club, owing its foundation to the military garrison. It was designed by Harry Shapland Colt who, as the club website suggests is arguably the finest golf course architect who ever lived. Whilst the course doesn’t have any water hazards to contend with there are plenty of bunkers, trees and slopes to test the golfer’s skill and endurance. As the course has a chalk base it drains well so the recent down pours and flooding hadn’t affected it unlike other courses across the country.
Four trophies were up for the taking and were presented by the Lady Captain, Lieutenant Colonel (Retd) Tena Mcmachan. Lieutenant Colonel (Retd) Suzie Greenwood won the Salver cup – best aggregate score of spring and summer meeting. Mrs Anita Gipson won The Medal with Lietenant Colonel (Retd) Tena Macmachan coming in second. Major (Retd) Sam Sharland won The Stableford with Lieutenant Colonel (Retd) Ishbel Thomson coming second and Mrs Georgina Mayes won the Vet’s cup – best front 9 for over 60s.
Following play and prize giving a meal was enjoyed by all before members departed for home.
The next meeting is Lady Captain’s day at the Autumn meeting and will be held at Sunningdale Heath Golf Club on 2nd September. Arrangements are already underway to fix dates for next year at Basingstoke, Tidworth and
Sunningdale.
The AMS LGS is always looking for
new members with any connections to the Army Medical Services, be it serving (regular or reservists), veterans, married to or served with AMS personnel and annual subscriptions are only £10. The cost of the matches and lunch vary depending on the location. For more information please contact the AMS LGS secretary Major (Retd) Gwenda Morris on gwenda.morris@sky.com .
Since leaving the Corps in 2015 golf has been the one thing that gives me a challenge. It is great being out on the course, in the fresh air and even if you have a bad game there’s always positive shots to think about and of course the wonderful company and chat on the way round.
Happy golfing!
Major (Retired) Sam Sharland
