The Peto Cup
Following the very successful last two years of boxing, the anticipation for this year’s Peto Cup was immense and the boxers did not disappoint: another fantastic display of courage
and raw grit was evident for all to see, including the new Com- manding Officer. The event was held over two days, the first day being the preliminary bouts and the second day the finals’ night.
The preliminaries consisted of five fights throughout the dif- ferent weight categories, but also some boxers getting byes into the finals. Troopers Towey and Smithson started it off with an excellent show with Trooper Towey the victor with some fine jabs. Troopers Morton and Morris were another great bout with some fine boxing for complete novices, testimony to the training provided had been, with Trooper Morton finally taking the win. Lance Corporal Eaton showed some real class against Trooper Biles who also showed great courage for his first time in the ring. The next two bouts were both heavy weight fights, the win- ners of each would match up in the finals. Troopers Clegg and Raynor-Smith both performed admirably for novice boxers. but it was clear that Lance Corporal Doyle’s and Trooper Everitt’s previous experience gave them the edge and they moved on to finals’ night.
The finals’ night was electric with the venue looking fantastic and the crowd loud and pumped for a great show of boxing. The Regiment were not disappointed. We were treated to ten bouts over the evening and all were competed to a very high standard. The most notable was the big hitting Trooper Everitt who man- aged to better Lance Corporal Doyle, who had not lost a fight and was crowned the Royal Armoured Corp Heavyweight Boxing Champion the previous year. The exhibition bouts came from the more seasoned boxers, Trooper Sands – fresh from his time with the Army Development squad for a second year – boxed against Fusilier Thompson and narrowly lost. Representing the Royal Artillery, Gunner Price boxed Lance Corporal Bracken – again, back at the Regiment after being with the Army devel- opment Squad. Bracken showed his class, with quick footwork and precision strikes the order of the night. He won convinc- ingly. The Best Boxer went to Trooper Graham, C Squadron. The Most Gallant to Trooper Soltani, also of C Squadron and the Peto Cup winning Squadron of 2017 was B Squadron, coached by Lance Corporal Crawford.
