REGIMENTAL JOURNAL OF THE ROYAL LANCERS (QUEEN ELIZABETHS’ OWN) 63
The Royal Lancers Mixed Martial Arts team has been domi- nated in recent times by Corporal Parker (Judo) and Cor- poral Hart (British Jiu-Jitsu). 2017 has been another successful year for Army Judo Team Captain Corporal Parker. While post- ed at the Army Training Regiment in Winchester, he has contin- ued to train and help develop the Army Team. He also competed as part of the Inter-Services Team at the British National Team event and fought against the best Judokas in Great Britain. Cor- poral Parker won all his fights with ease, but unfortunately the team was knocked out in the second round.
In September Corporal Parker entered The Army Champion- ships and took the gold medal in his weight category for the fourth year running. He then organised and successfully ran an Army Team training and selection camp in November so the team were ready to compete against the RAF and Navy for the title of ‘Inter-Services Champion’. At the Inter-Services, he again won the gold medal for his weight category, retaining his Inter-Services Champion title for a fourth year running. The Army Team dominated the event taking the Overall Winner’s Trophy, Best Dan Grade Team and most medals. As 2018 starts,
Corporal Parker finds himself in an entirely different Judo-Gi. He has made the decision to retire from competitive Judo and focus on the development of Army Judo by taking on the role of Army Team Coach.
On the other hand, Corporal Hart was invited to the Army In- vitational competition as an Ultra-Heavyweight and a Blue belt in a Gi and No-Gi contest. With his ever-developing skills and determination, he cruised through the tournament winning the gold medal in both categories and, The Gold Absolute and Overall Fighter of the tournament. Buoyed by his successes he entered a North of England run civilian competition where he again excelled, taking another gold medal and was crowned King Of The North Grappling Champion.
Corporal Hart leaves the Regiment in early 2018 to pursue a ca- reer as a military photographer. We are all sad to see him go, but wish him well on his newly chosen path. Hopefully, we will see him photographing The Royal Lancers Mixed Martial Arts team in an Army Dojo near you.

Due to the increased tempo of training this year, the golfing calendar has been very sparse. That said, the major high- light was the Regiment providing two teams to compete in the Royal Armoured Corps’ Golf
Championships. An increase in the uptake of those trying golf for the first time was mainly due to the golf passes kindly provid- ed by the Regiment for Catter- ick Golf Course. All ranks con- tinue to develop their golfing skills and techniques and we are seeing an unprecedented level of players take to the greens (or boys) on the Catterick course. Corporal Wootton has helped in coaching, was a key member of the Royal Armouted Corps team and has managed to play in multiple Army competitions.
The Regiment, along with more than 24 other teams, entered the Royal Armoured Corps Golf Championships held at Weymouth, Dorset. This was a two-day event which saw The Royal Lancers
team taking the lead at the end of day one of the competition. There were a few factors that resulted in the Lancers achieving third place at the end of the competition: Captain ‘Buzz’ White-
head changed his clubs for day two, Warrant Officer Class 2 Hall melted under the pressure and Corporal Newton’s score unfortunately did not count due to his REME cap badge. Over- all, it was an enjoyable two days of golf and a great opportunity to interact with fellow cavalry units.
The team look forward to the first golf sports tour in the shape of Exercise GOLFING LANC- ER. This is to be held at the ‘Home of Golf ’ in St. Andrews,
Scotland and will take place from 8th – 13th April as a training camp for this year’s Royal Armoured Corps’ Championship in
June 2018. If you happen to be about, please look us up.
