UP AND AWAY WITH MIRFIELD AIR CADETS
On Sunday 25th July three cadets from 868 (Mirfield) Squadron travelled to 644 Volunteer Gliding Squadron at RAF Syerston near Nottingham for a day, to undertake training for various levels of the Air Cadets gliding syllabus. Ben Ayrton (17) and Isabel Calvert (15) were attending for Blue Wings training and Joshua Clark (15) for Bronze Wings.
Their day’s training started with and introductory briefing including the on-going Covid compliance arrangements including social distancing, restricted occupancy numbers, wearing of face coverings where required and hygiene facilities. They were all provided with some ground school training, including the controls of the aircraft and how they affect the glider in the air, appropriate to the level they hoped to qualify for. They then moved out to the airfield to enjoy a series of flights (each of about five minutes duration) in the Air Cadets’ winch-lunched Viking glider, to put all their learning into practice and demonstrate the skills they had been taught in the air. For the Blue Wings, Ben Ayrton and Isabel Calvert each enjoyed three launches amounting to 15 minutes in the air, while Joshua Clark accumulated 45 minutes for the more advanced Bronze Level.
All three enjoyed great success on the day, gaining their respective gliding wings, and now hope to be able to progress to the next level of training; those that get as far as the Silver Wings course will be trained to solo standard.
