NEW ADULT INSTRUCTORS GET TO GRIPS WITH LIVING IN THE FIELD
By Major David Mather
Humberside and South Yorkshire’s Adult Development Team conducted the final weekend in the induction training cycle on Driffield Training area over the weekend 2 - 4th July 2021.
The aim of the induction cycle is to prepare the students for the Advanced Induction Course run by 4 Brigade’s Cadet Training Team.
SMI Michael Torr, SMI Mark Yeardley, SSI Paul Downs and SSI David Mulligan were joined by SSI Anthony Thomlinson from A Company to guide fifteen potential adult instructors through, what was for some, their first taste of fieldcraft and sleeping outside without the luxury of a tent or caravan.
Movement onto the training area at 0700 on
the Saturday Morning for an ORP breakfast (after the feeding in the field lesson) was followed by instruction in the art of field signals, movement with and without a rifle, section formations, patrolling, and obstacle crossing as the group patrolled their way to the harbour area.
SSI Downs demonstrated the finer arts of erecting a two man shelter which resulted in all bashas being erected with very little need for adjustment
Although some were well outside of their comfort zone everyone pushed through
just in time to avoid the heavy rain that we had been forecast all day.
Evening meal followed lessons in judging distance, target indication, plotting a route, movement at
night and stalking. As the light faded the students were briefed on the night stalking exercise which all seemed to enjoy.
After a night spent dodging the ”creepy crawlies” the students were at their stand to positions for 0700hrs. Breakfast was followed by instruction in fire control orders and individual, pairs and fire team fire and movement before heading back to camp for post exercise admin and a final de-brief.
Although some were well outside of their comfort zone everyone pushed through to end ex and comments of ”excellent” ”brilliant lessons” and ”enjoyed the weekend” were graciously passed on to the staff during the end of course feed-back session.
The weekend was attended by the following Potential Instructors, Kelsey Huggon, Pirithika
Kalairasan, Jordan Oates, Richard Shires, Leo Brigham, Diane Allen, David Cook, Jack Towler, Mathew Johnson, Jensen Dixon, Samuel Beatson, Beverley Stewart, Sean Davies, Joshua Kirk and Stuart Bone, who were all awarded their Potential Sergeant Instructor rank slides at the end of the weekend.
Well done to all!
