 E COY CELEBRATES
SALAMANCA DAY
By SSI Fiona McCallion and SI Colin Cranswick
On 22nd July 2021, E Company's members celebrated Salamanca Day. This day is the Rifles Regimental Day, and commemorates the events of 22 July 1812 when Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Wellington, carried out one of his most stunning victories over the French forces during the Peninsular War in Spain and Portugal.
Batley and Mirfield Detachments celebrated this special day with a Sunset Parade. Their honoured guests for the evening were the County RSM, RSMI Austin Butler, who is Rifles cap-badged and SMI Terry Yates (the Company Serjeant Major (CSM) of E Company).
For the first part of the evening, the RSM and CSM toured the joint Detachment visiting the various
RSM praised the cadets for their hard work and conduct
lessons, including some band training under the instruction of Sjt Alex Shakespeare. For the second part of the evening, the RSM and CSM joined all
the cadets and Adult Volunteers for a Regimental history lesson given by SI Colin Cranswick about why Salamanca Day is the Regimental Day of The Rifles.
After the Sunset Parade, the RSM praised the cadets for their hard work and conduct throughout the evening. He then went on thank the Detachment for their invitation. In addition to the visiting RSM and CSM, it was a pleasure for the detachments to welcome some newly signed up cadets for their first parade night. What a significant way to mark their first training evening!
   MINDEN DAY
By Colonel Jim Greenlee, Commandant
This story was written and published to the county on 1 August 2021.
The RSM and I would like to wish a happy Minden and Yorkshire Day to all of our members and their families. Today, we had the pleasure of marking the day by attending the opening of The Rifles Museum in Doncaster.
One of the reasons that the 1st of August was chosen for Yorkshire Day is because it is the anniversary of the Battle of Minden, a decisive battle in the Seven Years’ War in 1759.
A large number of Yorkshire soldiers fought in this battle - they included the Light Infantry, antecedents of E (The Rifles) Company, in addition to members of the Royal Artillery.
We would, therefore, also wish to extend our best Minden Day greetings to our Rifles and Royal Artillery cap-badged members, both adult volunteers and cadets. We hope you've had a wonderful day!
