Well, like most RAPTCIs yet another busy year has passed!
(approx 1000 trainees attended, a health fair in Feb which again saw over 1000 trainees attend and we are looking forward to the Inter Coy boxing on 15 Mar 18 and the REME champs boxing in May18.
Ex Dragon Patrol hosted by OC HQ Coy saw 400 Ph2 trainees split into 30 sections conducting 18 various stands and 100 Perm Staff deploy on the local training area for a 36hr patrol competition, and yes the RAPTCIs (including the ERI) and AAPTIs had to enjoy
After taking over the QMSI role at
8 Trg Bn REME (Lyneham) from
WO2 (QMSI) “Nelly” Nelson in
Oct 17 the last few months have
indeed flown by. 8 Trg Bn REME
is the largest Bn in the Army with
circa 1300 phase 2 trainees (and
can facilitate 1500 trainees), 200
permanent staff as well as just
under 200 soldiers that operate
within the Garrison footprint. SSI
(Sgt Dan Jerrams) and an ERI (SSgt Dodds) are doing a great job dealing with the day to day mainstream and ERI business, though with 4 Military AAPTIs and 5 SIOs.
The Bn is made up of 5 Coys with four of the 5 Coys each holding around 250-320 personnel. With a perimeter fence that is 16km around, there are 3 runways and the airfield is huge as some of you may be aware of from returning to the UK.
The sports facilities are excellent here with 3 rugby pitches, 4 football pitches (one of them is a 4g pitch), a CV suite, weights room, spin suite, 3 squash courts, powerlifting area, self-contained boxing area, climbing wall and new gymnasium complex. Not to mention a go-kart track out on the airfield, the recent addition of a circuit that has been designed for car and motorbike track days.
Prior to Xmas saw two Commanding Officer’s competition events and a Turkey run which the gym staff won easily thanks to the last 800m finished in style in a go-kart. We had a sports fair in Jan 18

the luxury of wearing “CAM CREAM for the duration!
If any of the old and bold out there had the absolute pleasure of knowing and working with Mr Ian Perrott (QMSI RAPTC) the current CV Suite will be re-named to “The Ian Perrott Suite” on the 11 Apr 18. This will be a short service headed up by the Garrison Commandant, Padre, CO, RSM and a few of the Perm Staff here at 8 Trg Bn REME and not to mention Ian’s Wife Yvonne and Daughter Claire. I am sure those who did know and work with Ian will know what a true gentleman, great man and RAPTCI he really was. “Mr Perrott” you are greatly missed by all of your family and friends”
With a business case recently submitted I hope that by the time this article is published my business case for £176k for new PTE kit will be signed off, leaving me to be able to remove some of the old PTE that has migrated from 10 Trg Bn REME (Bordon) and 11 Trg Bn REME (Arborfield) over the last 2 and a half years for a much needed refresh.
Due to the ERI post being gapped for 6 months prior to SSgt Dodds taking up the post in July 2017, he
has created some new processes and procedures for the trainees here at 8 Trg Bn REME. SSgt Dodds implemented correct Rehab Care Pathways and tracking of patients, constant dialogue with Med Centre & Physio with joint assessments along with UHC’s.

SSgt Dodds has implemented a 6/52 rolling programme that tracks each trainee in their Rehab process, with incoming, mid-term and out coming measures. The programme is now structured and the tracking of the patients occurs for the CoC. This has led to a positive response and a lifestyle/behaviour change for the trainees. The UHC are fully supportive of this new process and an audit is on-going on this practice.
Ph2 patients are in Rehab daily 0800-1200.
Rehab patients are generally taken off their Trade Training due to their injury, so daily rehab is appropriate for them to return to continue with their Trade Training. SSgt Dodds managed to secure 21 Sig Regt in Colerne to conduct Hydrotherapy Classes weekly, which is proving to be fundamental to rehabilitation.
In keeping with the ‘Soldier’s Healthy Plate’ and creating awareness for Healthy Lifestyle SSgt Dodds has delivered a bespoke Nutrition Brief to all Phase 2 Soldiers within the Unit.
