Chickens!
1. Chickens can distinguish more than 100 faces of members of their species.
2. Chickens have full-colour vision, just like we do.
3. Chickens can communicate with others, using more
than 24 vocalisations, each with a distinct meaning.
4. Chickens experience REM (rapid eye movement) during sleep, indicating that they may be dreaming.
5. During research experiments, hens have shown an ability for mathematical reasoning, self-control and even structural engineering.
6. Chickens are the closest living relative to the T. Rex.
7. Chickens aren’t completely flightless—they can get airborne enough to make it over a fence or into a tree.
8. With 25 billion chickens in the world, there are more of them than any other bird species.
9. Roosters perform a little dance called ‘tidbitting’ in which they make sounds (food calls) and move their head up and down.
10. In 2004 the chicken was the first bird to have its genome sequenced.
