St John Ambulance Stapleford Town Council
Surprised at Stapleford’s revived garden show
Despite the gloomiest of predictions, Stapleford & District Garden Holders Association celebrated the end of National Allotments Week on Saturday 13th August by welcoming many exhibitors and visitors to their first show in three years.
Stapleford’s Mayor, Councillor Jan Goold, accompanied by her husband Ken, opened the show to visitors at 1.30pm, having earlier judged several of the children’s classes.
Judged by Mr Bill Taylor, many vegetable and fruit entries were definitely unseasonal. Glossy aubergines, colourful chilli peppers and juicy blackberries – normally ripe much later in the year – were much admired, but the usual generous displays of peas, beans and sweetcorn had not coped well with the heatwave.
Cllr Goold referred to the pleasure she and her husband derive from their own
allotment – a place to forget everyday worries, and harvest fresh vegetables and fruit. During her Mayoral year,
she hopes to encourage gardening by promoting opportunities within the community, including the five allotment sites and “DigIn” on the Albany site.
Winner of the Diane Halford Shield for the highest number of points overall was Emily Cooke, a plotholder for the last five years. Nine-year-old Jack Lumbis was proud to receive the trophy for Best Apples in the adult section, but also submitted several entries including perfect carrots, in the children’s section.
Most of the costs of the show were covered by the tombola and the raffle, with many prizes donated by local businesses, and at the end of the
Show when plotholder ‘Harry’ Harrison auctioned all the entries, including many delicious homemade cakes, jams and other preserves, and vegetable-themed balloons donated by a local shop.
