5 RIFLES
Armoured Vehicle Live Fire Training, Sennelager Training Area, Germany
Ex CABRIT TEMPEST
Having spent Sep-Dec 23 in Germany conducting live firing and combined arms tactical training in the field, the battlegroup (BG) returned to Sennelager after Christmas to complete a Command, Staff and Tactical Training Exercise (CSTTX) in preparation
for Op CABRIT 14. The BGHQ were tested in planning and execution over four core warfighting missions.
The first phase saw BGHQ conducting practice planning cycles to shake out the cobwebs left over from leave. The remainder of the BG conducted simulator familiarisation, getting to grips with the particular way of
operating in the Combined Arms Tactical Trainer (CATT). This also presented the opportunity to integrate with the BG’s new international Subunit, the French 4th Coy Troupes de Marine, a potent combined arms detachment with integral Engrs, FSp Elms and heavy armour. Equally, we were able to work with the Royal Dragoon Guards (RDG), who were conducting their own mini CPX concurrently, to provide a brigade context to the scenario.
Once familiarisation was complete,
the BG entered the validation phase. This commenced with a gentle 8-hour planning
Ex NORDIC BUGLE
The 5 RIFLES Nordic season began in Idre, Sweden with a clear intent: retain the Infantry Championship and develop future Nordic skiers. Each training day consisted of two 2-hour sessions, and an afternoon session of dry firing drills. All sessions were led by a mixture of international athletes, with over five Olympic Games attendees among them.
Following the training camp, we deployed to France for the start of the race season. our season began in dominant fashion, winning each race in our successful defence of the Infantry Championships. This form continued into the Divisional Championships; 5
RIFLES became the first infantry
unit to win every race
since the Green Howards in 2002. Buoyed
by our performance, the team went on to secure the first ever RIFLES silver medal at the Army Championships, and secure second place overall. We also had some exceptional individual performances with LCpl Carter selected to train with the British Biathlon Union, and Rfn Webber finishing as the top junior novice across the Army. A great season, and the Regiment is well placed for future success.
