Thanks must go to Lance Corporal Adam Cannon and Rifleman Dominic House, who at each weekend have lent their skill and equipment as photographers to capture the professionalism of R Company’s soldiers, and the challenges of the training.
As the Company enters the final months before Exercise SPEARPOINT 3, we look ahead to the continued progression of lead up training. July will see the Riflemen return to Salisbury Plain for further Platoon level operations, followed by further live fire range weekends and finally, Company operations.
With spirits, fitness and ACMT-scores high, R Company is poised to meet the challenges of training in Northern Ireland.

THE FENTIMAN SHIELD 2024
Usually a patrols competition, this year’s event took the form of a fitness contest, held in Abingdon, Buckinghamshire. Eight teams took part, exercises were drawn from the Soldier Conditioning Review (SCR) and Role Fitness Test (Soldier) (RFT(S)). This allowed maximum participation, with teams able to showcase athleticism and teamwork across a mixture of six physical and two non-physical events.
Day one immediately set the tone
for the weekend. The first event, a combination of Concept II rowing and ‘jerrycan carry,’ witnessed the competitive spirit with some impressive distances
on the rowers and A Company taking an early lead. This was followed by a classic powerbag relay with good showings from all teams.
Following the lunchtime break – featuring a health fair and a stand from the Op COURAGE mental health support team – it was a return to competition with the ‘hex bar deadlift challenge.’ Each team put forward their four strongest lifters with impressive results nudging G Company into the lead. The final physical event of the
day, a combination of Wattbike distance and box jumps again produced impressive distances with a good showing from B Company. With teams’ neck-and-neck, physical challenges gave way to a military knowledge and Armoured Fighting Vehicle (AFV) test before the evening’s dinner and social.
Day two saw the final physical event;
a GPMG gun-run around a 3km course.
In the early morning mist, the display of grit and determination held as guns were dismantled and teams headed off, vying for that all important top spot. The final event was a Kim’s Game based on objects seen over the weekend.
The competition concluded with
an award ceremony recognising the outstanding performances of all, but
it was B Company who were declared the overall champions with the highest total points across all events. The event fostered camaraderie, sportsmanship and a spirit of healthy competition among the participants and a memorable experience for all concerned.
