CWGC Casualty records of the ten Royal Scots buried in Famagusta

Besides the ten soldiers buried in Famagusta, two more soldiers from this Battalion are buried in Troodos
Military Cemetery, having died there during the Battalion’s sojourn in this summer hill station, namely

Private Hugh Divers (died 8 June 1916) and Private James Docherty (22 August 1918). Another soldier
from this Battalion, Private R Howare (2 July 1918) is buried in Nicosia British Cemetery. It is probable

that, like most of their colleagues in Famagusta, Private Docherty in Troodos and Private Howare in
Nicosia died of influenza.

The Other First World War Burials

The first two burials in Famagusta from the First World War were Corporal Willis Ridler, Rifle Brigade,

(died 28 April 1916) and Private W Maiden, The King’s (Liverpool Regiment), (23 September 1916). The

remaining eight (non-Royal Scots) burials, including two from the Royal Navy and one from the Royal
Army Medical Corps, all date between July 1918 and June 1920, when the influenza epidemic was at its

height, so it is probable that most of these servicemen died from this.

The Interwar Graves – Two Royal Navy Burials

There are two interwar graves in this cemetery, one of which is maintained by the CWGC, the other having
a private headstone. Buried alongside each other are two Fleet Air Arm pilots, Lieutenant Commander

Frederick Sydney Benny and Lieutenant Commander Archibald Guthrie Elliott, from Flight 461 of
the aircraft carrier HMS Glorious, victims of a flying accident on 2 October 1931.
