During the Korean War he went to Japan in 1952 to be Officer in charge of the Surgical Division at
the British Commonwealth Hospital at Kure where he was created an Officer of the Most Excellent
Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his valuable services. He published his experiences in an article
‘Commonwealth Surgery in the Korean War’ in The Lancet in 1956. He took over command of BMH
Iserlohn in West Germany in 1957, afterwards becoming Assistant Director Medical Services 2nd Division.
In 1961 Colonel Wright left West Germany for Cyprus to command BMH Dhekelia, but his command
was cut short by his untimely death.
He loved rugby and soccer, and used to be a keen sprinter. Latterly he had taken up Scottish country
dancing and gardening with his wife, whom he had married in 1938. She had been a sister in the Queen
Alexandra’s Imperial Military Nursing Service. Their two sons were also in the Army.
‘The tributes paid at his funeral by the BMH staff, all ranks of the Services in
Cyprus, and by the British and Cypriot communities, were a moving testimony to
the respect and affection in which he was held’10
